Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560) on true faith

PhilippMelanchthon

“Faith does not mean merely knowing the story of Christ, for even the devils confess that the Son of God appeared and arose from the dead, and in Judas there was a knowledge of Christ. True faith is truly to retain all the words which God has given to us, including the promise of grace; it is a heartfelt reliance on the Savior Christ, a trust that God for his Son’s sake graciously forgives us our sin, receives us, and makes us heirs of eternal blessedness.”

– Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560), Loci Communes, 1555 edition, p. 158
